Episode 21: Your Teachers Have Emotional Bank Accounts And You Are The Banker
You know how this works.
You earn money, it gets deposited in your bank account and then you use that money to buy groceries, pay bills or eat out at a restaurant. You make deposits. You make withdrawals. You also know that if you don’t have enough money, the little screen at the grocery store will say “insufficient funds” or “card declined”. If you are of a certain age, you also know what it means to bounce a check.
There is an important truth that every private school leader should know: Your Teachers Have Emotional Bank Accounts And You Are The Banker.
On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, you are going to learn 10 ways to make deposits in your teachers’ emotional bank accounts:
- Smile
- Treat them like people
- Recognize their hard work
- Offer practical help
- Listen and validate their feelings
- Notice, Remember, Encourage
- Communicate clearly
- Protect their teaching time
- Say “thank you”
- Apologize
This is going to be hard work, but it will be worth it. When your teachers feel heard, seen, valued and emotionally safe they will work harder, stay at your school longer and bring their best selves to school every day. Everyone wins when that happens!
