Episode 32: Ask yourself these 6 questions TODAY so that NEXT year will be better

QUESTION #1  WHAT ARE 3 WORDS OR PHRASES THAT I WOULD USE TO DESCRIBE THIS SCHOOL YEAR?

  • Go with what immediately comes to mind
  • Think deeply about those words or phrases
  • Do they align with what you had hoped that this year would be?
  • At the beginning of this school year, LAST DAY OF SCHOOL, STUDENT WORDLE (Skills, Emotional Safety, Fun) Mini-poster
  • How did we do? Pretty well.
  • We are proactive and intentional on this podcast.
  • What are the three words or phrases that you want to accurately describe next school year?

 

QUESTION #2: WHAT WERE THE 2 OR 3 BEST MOMENTS OF THIS SCHOOL YEAR?

  • Did they involve student interactions, teacher interactions, an event?
  • ASK YOURSELF why were these moments special? Why did they energize me?
  • What can you intentionally do to make these moments happen more often next year?
  • We often think that we don’t have ANY control over these interactions.
  • Soccer game CHANT (Scheduled to be at soccer game). Interaction in a 5th Grade Homeroom (Scheduled myself to be there)
  • Schedule it!



QUESTION #3: WHAT WERE THE 2 OR 3 MOST STRESSFUL/MOST CHALLENGING MOMENTS OF THIS SCHOOL YEAR?

  • Do these stressful moments have anything in common?
  • Why did they happen?
  • Was there anything that you could have done in the way of intentional pre-planning to change the outcome?
  • Most of the time the answer is "NO" (A student is injured in an accident. A teacher’s parent dies unexpectedly. A parent has a ridiculously unreasonable request)
  • But sometimes WE DO have Some control over making these situations happen less often
  • About 15 years ago, I went through about 3-4 years of being super stressed and anxious
  • Overpromise to the parent. Not back up my teacher. 
  • Talk to teacher and bad mouth the parent. Not give honest feedback. 
  • Stressed out that it would all come out

 

QUESTION #4   ON A SCALE OF 1-10, HOW WOULD I RATE MY LEVEL OF INTENTIONAL SELF CARE?

  • What was the evidence?
  • What tangible, actual things did you do?
  • Did you schedule them into your calendar?
  • Did you have good intentions that did not happen?
  • If you had a score that was 1-6, WHY? What can you INTENTIONALLY DO TO MAKE THIS BETTER?

QUESTION #5: ON A SCALE OF 1-10, HOW WOULD I RATE MY LEVEL OF PRODUCTIVITY?

  • What was the actual evidence to support this rating?
  • Did the tyranny of the urgent set your agenda for more than 50% of the days of the school year?
  • Did you allow other people’s priorities to become your priorities?
  • How did you manage your email inbox? Remember that your email inbox is a chronological list of everyone else’s priorities
  •  If you had a score that was 1-6, WHY? What can you INTENTIONALLY DO TO MAKE THIS BETTER?

  • Listened to the podcast

  • Watched a webinar
  • Attended a conference
  • GREAT!!!!
  • Your answer might also be that you had good intentions, but the tyranny of the urgent made this impossible
  • DON’T BEAT YOURSELF UP OVER IT
  • What is your intentional plan to grow as a leader?
  • List 3 things. Schedule them into your calendar

  • Sometime in the next week, set aside 30 minutes, ask yourself these 5 questions and jot down the answers.
  • Then come back to those answers next week and spend 30 minutes thinking about how you can use that information to improve your leadership and the culture at your school.
