Big Takeaways:

What is Amygdala Hijack?

  • Let’s start by defining what an amygdala hijack is.
  • The amygdala is a part of your brain responsible for processing emotions, especially those related to fear and survival.
  • It’s like your brain’s alarm system. When faced with a perceived threat, the amygdala takes over and pushes you into 'fight, flight, or freeze' mode.
  • Your brain is flooded with cortisol
  • This is great if you’re facing a true danger, like encountering a wild animal, but not so helpful when it happens in everyday stressful situations, like a difficult conversation at work or a conflict at home.
  • In an amygdala hijack, your rational brain, the prefrontal cortex, is bypassed.
  • You act on emotion, not reason.
  • This can lead to impulsive reactions, like yelling, saying things you don’t mean, or making decisions that aren’t in your best interest.
  • The good news is that, if you follow these 4 steps, you can avoid these hijacks and stay in

4 Steps To Avoiding Amygdala Hijack

  1. Pause
  2. Embrace The Space
  3. Respond Don’t React
  4. Regulate Your Autonomic Nervous System

Call to Action

  • Next time your amygdala hijacks your brain, pause and take one deep breath
